BLOGTIQUETTE aka Blogger Etiquette

Yesterday on twitter, we were talking about giveaways on blogs, commenting, manners, etc. etc. etc. (and shopping on Rue La La...that's another post)

I received an email from a follower soon after. She explains to me about being a new blogger and really doesn't know "rules" what to do & not to do. I understand. I have been there. All of us have. I figured this was a great time to pop this post back up incase anyone else is new or unsure.

If you have anything to add to the list, please feel free to!!

** I recently decided that I am not going to follow a blog for a giveaway if it isn't one that I "think" I will read. So, therefor when I have giveaways, being a follower of FF&P will not be an entry. Makes sense to me☺I want you to read b/c you want to, not to win some cute preppy monogrammed goodie!!

** ⌚ I try to hit my reader at the crack of dawn ☕  I sometimes don't get to visit everyone cause they are on different time zone/blog later in the day. So, if I don't see you {my daily reads} you know why. Although I try to catch up later in the evening when my kids are in bed. Doesn't always happen but I try☺ {i also have a family blog so sometimes it's hard to keep on top}

**I am doing a lil twitter housecleaning. I am not sure who 90% of my followers are. {they follow but we have never corresponded, KWIM?} If by chance I accidentally delete you, please let me know. {I have a hard time putting bloggers/twitterers' together if the names aren't the same, lol}

Blogger Etiquette

Let's talk about some Blogger Etiquette shall we? A while back I came across a blog w/a blog hop that had rules. I was like hmmm, rules huh? Well, after reading these rules, let's call them guidelines, it really made a lot of sense to me. I realized that maybe I had been a bad girl  rule breaker. Not because I think I am above the rules but rather because I didn't know! Who knew?? Who would know? Shortly after that, I made the vow to myself  to never visit a blog and leave without commenting. Even if I had nothing to say,  I found/find something. You will always know if I was in your "area". {that wasn't really a "rule" but something that I feel is considerate on my part-you took the time to write it, least I can do is acknowledge it} So, if you get a smily face, you know I was speechless BUT I was there, ha!

Anywho, today I googled & got some really good results that I thought I'd share with you all. You can find them/more here,here,herehere & here.

Blogger  Etiquette

  • If you link to a site, try to visit that site at least once every 2-4 weeks.

    1. Always leave a comment on these sites. {guilty, after reading/learning this I am 100% on board!

  • Respond to commenters. Your readers took the time to offer their thoughts, keep them coming back by reciprocating. {I try hard to do this, abt 90%} - this is a good reason to make sure your email is enabled via blog settings - edited to add on 1.9.10: i have set up my email responder to automatically thank the reader for their comment.{i change it daily to correspond to the post} I am so thankful for all the comments, it's just hard to reply to all in a timely manner. {but I still try} If you ask a question, YOU WILL get a personal reply. {unless i somehow miss it OR your email isn't enabled}  I was stressing out trying to reply back to everyone b/c I AM thankful that you took time to come see me. Alot of my time was getting wasted in writing back a reply to find their email was disabled :(

  • Always be honest and encouraging in your comments. {i am always positive, score!}

  • Do not use gimmicks to attract readers. This will diminish the worth of what you are saying. {i don't, do I??}

  • If you give a blog more than a casual glance, leave a comment. {ABSOLUTELY!}

    • If you participate in a blog hop, always leave comment & thank the host (s). You should always link back to the host (s). Keep your post relevant to the hop. Don't spam with giveaways. {good advice, a must do!}
    • If you see a blog that could have potential and you have an idea as to how to make it better, leave constructive comments. {this is something I would never do!!}
    • If you find a blog that deeply interests you, link to it.
      1. Announce in a comment in that blog that you have done so and invite the author to visit your blog.
      2. It is okay to ask for reciprocity but do not make your link contingent upon this. {great ideas!}
      3. Encourage new bloggers, especially the ones that represent interesting content.
        1. Offer to swap links. (This differs from #6. I believe that with a new blogger, offering to help with a link to their site should be reciprocated.) {I'll help anyway I can, even though I don't know as much as i'd like}
        2. When leaving a comment on a blog for the first time, let the author know how you found his/her blog, especially if you found it through a link on another blog. {THIS is something I will start ASAP!}
        3. If you want to increase readership, you have to read other blogs and leave comments. "Do onto others as you would have them do onto you." {AMEN, PASS THE WINE}
        4. Don’t be long winded. At least too often. There are times when it’s alright to expound a bit. But let that be the exception, not the rule. {hmm, i need to work on that!}
        5. If you reprint another’s work, be sure that you give credit to the author and link to the author’s site. Most authors, including me, do not mind if you reprint their work as long as correct credit is given and a link-back is established.
          1. Be careful of copyright infringements. {never have, but absolutely would!}
          2. Plagiarism is bad.......very bad. {very bad}
          3. Language and appropriateness is difficult to discuss. What is appropriate to one can be inappropriate to another. The same goes for language.
            1. You do have the ability (“Flag Blog") to notify a Blogger of objectionable content.
            2. However, just like with television, you have the power to not visit objectionable blogs. {true that!}
            Did you learn anything new? I know I did. Hanging my head in shame, blame my head not my heart. Anything that can make our online bloggy time more enjoyable/user friendly is definitely worth my time to type and share with you all! I so enjoy my time blogging and coming to visit my blog friend....old and new!  Hard to believe I started my private blog about 5 years ago! Funny how I still have some of those friends:) It was H A R D to make friends being private, mercy! {FYI, if you ever switch to a different blogsite, i.e. typepad; BACK YOUR OLD BLOG UP, I lost 3 yrs when I didn't}

    1. Who knew? Interesting. Does make sense, though. I will try harder! I promise, Daphne. :)

      Happy Thursday.

      By the way, almost done shopping! Yay!

    2. Wow, lady- so much to think about. I love some of these little pointers!!

      ReplyDelete
    3. Blogging is becoming a full time job! I confess I have read and not commented ... most often cause I didn't finish reading because of a distraction or computer went off-line and therefor the considerate response part of my brain didn't kick in blinking 'respond' likely because I couldn't so much as remember what blog I was reading. I pledge to do better. Did I just break the 'don't be too wordy rule'? : )

    4. I just stumbled upon your blog (I was intrigued by the title, sounds like me! Flips & pearsl!) and was smitten by the song (hello Amy Grant Christmas, best ever!)

      Great rules, I'm guilt of some as well! But I do try!! :)

    5. Thanks so much for sharing the blog etiquette tips! I definitely agree with them and will strive to be a better blogger/reader :)

    6. As a new blogger, definitely a must read for me. Thanks for putting it up!

    7. My friend I thik you are sharng cutting edge news!!! THANK YOU... still being somewhat of a newbie (under 1 year) at blogging ... I'm learning BlogLand is certainly more than just a place to write ones thoughts. It really is a world on to its own .. virtual but still a world. When we enter this world we can choose to learn; make new friends; and help others. I don't think we (generally speaking) understand the power of our written words or lack of , impact others.

      These suggestions you have offered are great stepping stones to understanding this new world we are all taking a part in creating...

      Blessings my friend... xo HHL

    8. Good job, D! I think we all need to be reminded of this every once in a while...

      I try so hard to reply to comments too but sometimes it just takes me a few days! Haha!

      Have a great one, friend! Any ornament yet? Keep me posted, mom is freaking!

    9. Oh and love the new background! Very you!

      ReplyDelete
    10. Thanks for the tips! I try to oblige by most of them, but did not know others. Anyways, I like the new green background. Green's my fav color :)

    11. Thanks for the info. Very helpful for someone who just dabbles in the blogging world. I do wish I had more time to "go all out" but these tips will definitely help for now! I do love your blog. I found it through Webisodes a few months ago and have been following since. Sorry I'm just now getting around to saying hello!

      ReplyDelete
    12. First, I'm totally in love with that illustration!

      I feel the need to sit beside you and hang my head in shame as well. I read most of my blogs in Google Reader and leave comments as I see fit. Bad me. I think I shall endeavor to change this behavior. Thanks for sharing these "rules".

      Run on.

      ReplyDelete
    13. Great tips! I love that you put your thoughts in red! I will try and leave a comment on every blog I visit too. I don't know how to e-mail back to commenters but I want to learn! BTW, you are not long winded. I enjoy reading what you write. Have a great Thursday!

      ReplyDelete
    14. Very good "guidelines" to follow. I have learned them as I went and the one I struggle with is leaving comments on every blog I view. It is hard because I try to be faithful in visiting almost everyone in a party when I link up. So between commenting on bloggers who visit me, the party bloggers and blog post that really catch my attention, it doesn't leave much time!! I will try harder going forward!! Thanks for the reminders!!!

      ReplyDelete
    15. Thanks for posting! I'm relatively new myself! =)

      ReplyDelete
    16. There is so much to learn about blogging beyond creating a site and posting content... Thanks for the encouragement to get out there and participate!

      ReplyDelete
    17. thanks for all the great tips! As a new blogger(since august) these are super helpful.
      Love the new background!

      ReplyDelete
    18. Thanks for posting this! I am guilty of breaking a few of those!!! Oops :)

      ReplyDelete
    19. Great list - I'm guilty of breaking a few every now and then. I can't believe Christmas is so close! I only have two more gifts left to buy and I'm done. Our tree is already overflowing...

      ReplyDelete
    20. Who knew blogging had so many rules?! Thanks for sharing them!! I'm your newest follower! :)

      ReplyDelete
    21. These are all very good suggestions! I don't comment every time I visit a blog, but I try to! I will admit though, that I get a bit intimidated sometimes by the bloggers who get hundreds of comments on each post!

      ReplyDelete
    22. Wondeful post. Everyone should follow Blogger etiquette. Im guilty of breaking a few rules of course, but if I do visit someones blog that I really like, I leave me a comment always, and hope they comment back. I mean who doesn't love getting comments right? (:

      ReplyDelete
    23. I love reading your blog. I am new to blogging myself, so it was nice to read the rules. I am guilty of not commenting sometimes. Keep up the good work and I will work on comments. Not sure how to do a "link up".

      ReplyDelete
    24. I'm commenting! YAY! :)

      I do always comment [especially because I'm new to the blogging community] so A+ for me on that one! :D

      Ahh, I need to work on my Christmas shopping . . . ASAP! Thanks for the reminder!

    26. Oh Lord...how do you back up your blog!?!?!? I could be in trouble!

      ReplyDelete
    27. Hey girl, glad to be reminded of these rules that I've too often been guilty of breaking. Like you said, sometimes life gets in the way!
      I have not even started Christmas shopping, Ha~

      ReplyDelete
    28. Wow, this was such a thorough list! Thanks so much for sharing it! From all of the comments, I can tell a lot of others liked it too! Hope you're feeling better!

      I got the TB Eddies in the mail yesterday and wanted them to fit so badly. I wore them around the house for about an hour, and LOVED the back of the heel - I wish they'd make the Revas like that...but the front, near my middle big toe was rubbing wrong - so they weren't comfortable enough for me. And man, they were buttery smooth! Oh well, guess I'll have to return them, and get another pair of Revas, perhaps? Thanks for all of your advice though.

      Oh yeah, and how exactly do you back up a blog?? I have no idea, and feel like that may be SLIGHTLY important!

      ReplyDelete
    29. I hope you're feeling better! I certainly learned some things. I'm with you on not telling someone how they could make their blog better. I have enough stress, I don't want to be stressed about the blog! Also, I like when people have lots to say in their comments. Maybe because I tend to go on & on & on myself....

      ReplyDelete
    30. Thanks for this! I have had a blog for several years, but am just entering the "outside blogging world" too. :) I have been totally unsure of what "the rules" are. I certainly don't want to hurt anyone or breech etiquette!!
      I often wonder when someone comments, should I comment back to them on my blog, or go to their blog and comment there - or both - or what?! :)
      Thanks for the tips. :))

      ReplyDelete
    31. So true! I am guilty of some of those, but will try to work on it. So important about the emails being enabled!! I try to respond to many comments and get a no-reply blogger in the email. xoxo

      ReplyDelete
    32. I'm guilty - I do read your blog, along with a few others a couple of times a week and hardly ever post.....I did post a while back asking about a green jacket you posted on here - which I loved and have been looking for one similar all fall....do you mind telling me the brand? Thanks - and I'm done shopping! :)

      ReplyDelete
    33. Well that was great! I did learn several things!

      ReplyDelete
    34. I've been lurking around here for several weeks and I'm honestly not sure if I've made a comment or not, but blog ettiqute has demanded it. :)

      As for shopping, I'm just about done. I have a few more things to run out and get and I still have stocking stuffers to pick up, but one marathon trip to Target should do it!

      ReplyDelete
    35. Thanks for the wisdom.

      I found your blog because I read it almost every day, lol...but don't comment each time {oops}, so I'll try to be better also! :)

      ReplyDelete
    36. Great post, D! It's sooo true - we're all "guilty" of these mistakes! But....we must try harder to be better blog friends. :-)
      I know for me, it's sooo upsetting when you receive no comments - or just a few comments. I'm not sure the readers (ones without blogs themselves) really understand that comments keep us going. I know many other bloggers see their comments as "status symbols"
      XOXO
      p.s. Holiday shopping - not finished. Not one gift wrapped. JUST got a tree up tonight! YIKES!

      ReplyDelete
    37. ahh great tips! thanks for all the helpful ideas! :) xoxo

      ReplyDelete
    38. Thanks for the advice. I am pretty bad about leaving loooong comments. If the blogger reminds me of something, I share a story...not always a good thing :)

      ReplyDelete
    39. This is great! I just blogged a little about blogger tips and the whole "link your email to your blog" thing - I hate when i get a great comment and cannot respond to it! Boo! :(

      I'm bad about long-winded comments, as you can see :)

      These are great tips, thanks for all of your hard work in putting them together! And have a great weekend!

      ReplyDelete
    40. thanks for the bloggy advice... i am an offender at times - especially with replying to comments. eep! i've started yesterday, and failed yesterday with the challenging day i had... we'll see if i can keep it up today!

      ReplyDelete
    41. So So glad to see this little reminder out there! Many times people get to typing away and forget these things.

      Another little tidbit, many people don't realize that there are LAWS that apply to blogging. I don't just mean the ones where you have to say if you profitted from or received free goodies from a company you are posting about. I thought of this when reading about the plagarism. If you use someone else's photo you must give credit. This is especially true if you have ads on your blog. I see lots of people that need to listen up to this part. If you use someone else's photo, especially without their permission, and you have ads on your blog you are considered to be making money from someone else's intellectual property! You can be sued for this. It is also just unsavory to take credit for someone else's work. I'm sure as a photographer you can really understand how hurtful that can be.

      ReplyDelete
    42. Oh goodness, after re reading my comment I am afraid I sound like I am saying you do this. I know you don't! I was using "you" as a generalization to any other commentors reading.

      Just wanted to clarify but I like your bloggie and don't want you to think I was being mean!

      ReplyDelete
    43. This is a great post. I have no clue- have just been picking up as I go along!

      Thank you so much for your email checking on me the other day! I have been so busy (hosted my 1st Thanksgiving! work in the jewlery business= holiday craziness)and I haven't had much time/ been inspired to write on my blog.

      We are doing well and hope to be back at it soon. I wish you and your family a wonderful, beautiful Christmas!!

    56. Thanks for the TIPS! I just recently learned 90% of the comments I emailed back a response or a thank you were all no-reply. I don't know how to enable or what it is that I am supposed to do that will fix that. So, although.. I had the best of intentions & thought I was being a good blogger... I wasn't.

    68. Dearest Daphne,

      Great etiquette points! I'd love to see more use of a name above the comment box. For me it is just a courtesy to address the writer by the name but if you have to scroll all the way back to find it somewhere, it is time consuming. So the comment box would be a great spot to list it there.
      Lots of love,

    71. Whew…I am guilty of breaking a lot of these blog rules, but if I visit a blog, I always try to comment. Sometimes I can be long winded in my comments, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. To me, it shows genuine interest in what they had to say. Generic comments are something that bothers me and I sometimes wonder if the person actually read my post. I don’t expect a summary of what I said, but there are times you can definitely tell the person didn’t even read what you had to say.

      I’m getting better about responding to comments, but sometimes I only do it if they asked a question. I guess I don’t want the reader to feel obligated to respond to my email about their comment. Sometimes it can go on and on (I hope that makes sense).

      I’m with you and all for being positive. Being mean, passive aggressive, etc. isn’t very nice and I stay away from all of that.

      The only other thing I would add is that I wish people would turn off word verification. I did this a month ago and have had no issues. It makes it so much easier for people to comment and like I said, I’ve seen no increase in spam.

      Oh and I don’t like it when people plug their blog in my comments. That seems to be a new trend and I think it’s kind of tacky. Call me old fashioned, but I feel like if you want to grow your blog, you’ll visit other blogs and become active in the community. I guess it’s no big deal, but just thought I’d throw it out there.

      See…I told you I can be long winded :)

    72. I learned a few things. Thank you. I would never have thought of an auto e-mail responder.

    73. Girl I still got my 57 lil ol' "friends" following me and i'm happy to have that..."I yam who I yam!" :)
      I started bloggin' just to find real people, real recipes, real life just to feed my craftiness inspire me and let me know i'm not the only one living lifes ups and downs. I have to say that there's been a couple that were my first I followed that weren't "bigger than life" blogs and then within a month or so from when I started they blew up! I still visit those every once in a while but seriously think about not even bothering. At first when i'd leave them a comment or ask specific questions, they would answer and leave me a kind comment also in return or even just a thanks...now it's like they don't have time or care or maybe don't like me or possibly all the above. Sometimes I wanna say, "hey! there's some of us out here who followed you before you had a 100 sponsors and 5000 followers so let's not get the big head...there's another 100 blogs out there like yours so be kind"....don't read me wrong...i'm not against making the money and living the life you want but I am against rudeness and if there's such a thing as a blog snob, I think I can list a few. Whew! There's my yearly vent....thanks Daph! LOL :)

    76. Great post! Excellent tips for newbies and good reminders for the veterans.

      I don't follow a blog or someone on twitter (or even like their FB page) to gain a contest entry. I like Twitter for the conversation...if you're never going to talk to me, why follow me (and why should I follow you)?

    77. How do you back your blog up? I've seen where you can have your blog printed into a book. I think this is a great idea because I truly look at mine as an online journal :) Sometimes I wish I had not told anyone about mine so I could be more open and honest but oh wells! Good post!

    79. OMG... I found you through another blogger today and I think you are freakin hysterical. This is a great post, because it is important for new bloggers to know what they are doing. :) Great job explaning everything. New to your blog, but will for sure come back for more. :)

      P.S. Not that you have to go look at my blog because you soooooo do not, but I'm doing this series on marriage on my blog and I would love for you to come by and check it out. Again, you don't have to though... you're a pretty busy woman! :)

    80. Love your post! I am starting my blog soon and very nervous about starting out. I can not tell you how useful this is. I have no doubt that I will stumble a bit and make a few mistakes but I love rules and am a slave to etiquette, manners make the world a much nicer place, and I am so grateful to have a jumping off point!

    82. it always makes me sad when someone has a no reply email. esp when they ask me a question in their comment...helloooo i'd like to respond!

    83. This is a really helpful post! Thanks!

      I have always wondered how bloggers are able to respond to my comments via email. You know the type where my comment shows up in the email too? Could you explain this to me?

    84. Thanks for the helpful tips, sweet lady!

    85. I completely agree with these forms of blog etiquette. It's so sweet that you reply back to your readers and leave a comment at the blogs you visit, that is beyond considerate in the tech age :)

    88. I'm a relatively new blogger and really struggled with what was acceptable and what wasn't. I've learned a bit by trial and error, but this has really helped me!

      I just started reading your blog, linked from The Blonde Episodes. I love it!
